CAPALA

“Nickname”

Despite the pouring rain and cold temps, a team from Rosemary Farm ventured to a BLM Mustang Adoption Event being held nearby. It was the last day of the event and nearly half the horses were still available, which prompted us to immediate action. And after a long day, three young mustangs came HOME, to Rosemary Farm Sanctuary.

The final choice was a dark bay 4 yo gelding, now named Capala. Born in a holding pen, he has never known freedom.... or grass... or running water, or any real individual attention. Such a contrast to the 4 yo horses here at the Sanctuary, who are gentled, big and healthy, able to have their hooves trimmed and get vaccines, who know their names. He has already established himself as the 'leader' of the trio.

Imagine how disorienting and stressful it would be to be in a cage, moved without understanding, new companions, one chute after another, no idea what is happening... that is the life for these unclaimed mustangs.

There are currently over 60,000 mustangs in long term holding pens, about the number still wild. There must be a better way.

Our small solution is to welcome a few young adults, overlooked, growing up like this, and bring them home. Curious, of course frightened, but also excited and playful in their new paddock, with some grass and a stream, as well as fresh hay, shelters and other horses nearby. We will begin by getting to know them, gentling them, and eventually hope they may be adopted by approved homes. They are wonderful examples of mustangs, one of our favorite horses!

Our hearts and our Sanctuary are full, knowing we changed the lives of Savannah, Koa and Capala, forever.
