MOON MIST
Welcomed to the Sanctuary — July 2015
Across the Rainbow Bridge — October 2022
Moon Mist was:
• a sorrel Arabian mare
• welcomed to The Sanctuary as an owner surrender
• a member of Molly & Finn’s Herd
• full older sister to Venezuela
• paramour to the dashing Dooley
“The Older Twin”
“Let them go on a good day”
And today that is what we did. Our senior Arabian mare, Moon Mist, has had health issues for two years that have been managed, but in the past month, they were no longer able to be so.
A graceful mare, 26 yo, she was the full older sister to Venezuela, and they have been together for life, having been surrendered seven years ago to Rosemary Farm Sanctuary, part of a mass rescue when a former breeder of fine Arabians fell apart. Many had little or no training, or vet care, and were in trouble. Several rescues intervened and Rosemary Farm welcomed six of the herd, two mares and four geldings.
As Mist’s medical needs grew, she grew more engaging, whinnying for turn in and attention. Horses are intelligent and loving, but are also mortal… We have a unique property that allows our equines to head up the mountain, and many romp and play up there, in groups. However, we have witnessed aging or sick horses begin to withdraw and stay up there for days on end, as their time grew short. Isolating from the group, so odd for a herd species. I can’t speak for them, but perhaps they were getting closer to God.
Moon Mist will be laid to rest on the mountain she loved, forever at home. Venezuela has other family to look after her down below. She, and we, will miss her.
