JAKE

Welcomed to the Sanctuary — March 2018
Across the Rainbow Bridge — April 2022

“A long road to peace”

This brave old boy had a long journey.

Born and bred to be on the track, Jake was tattooed on his lip, which Standardbreds no longer even are, that's how old this horse was. Many Standies, after racing for a bit, become driving horses for private owners, because they are a wonderful breed, strong and willing. But after they begin having medical issues, they often are sold again at auction, and that is where Jake's last owner purchased him, just to give him a home.

The details are lost because that owner passed in a cold winter storm, and Jake was the only soul on the farm still alive when he was found by the local Fire Department. It was March 2018, winter, and there was deep snow, and when called the next day, Rosemary Farm drove right over to load up the old horse and get him to the hospital.

When Jake was ready to come home, he joined Rosemary Farm, which was another big change, and emotionally difficult for the senior. It took time for Jake to learn his new name given to him by the firefighters who saved him (no one knew what he had been called before). He had dropped pasterns and a fragile stance, the deep groove of harness on his nose, and all those years had taken a toll on his body. But everyone at The Sanctuary just loved this old boy, who learned how to love everyone back.

Staydopted™ by a special friend, Jake came full circle in our care and was at peace until he crossed the Rainbow Bridge in April 2022.

Run free and strong Jake, until we see you again.
