Plein Air Painting Weekend
September 12-14, 2025
The inaugural Plein Air Painting Weekend, hosted at our 200+ acre historic farm, with approximately 100 equines in residence!
Artists of all skill levels are invited to join us for a weekend of painting and sketching the horses, the barns and the landscape of the beautiful Catskills. Painting stations will be set up with unique access to our residents, including a ‘donkey station’, a buckboard and horse in gear, and wild horse viewing. There will also be some ’still life’ displays arranged with farm and equine equipment. We will have equine handlers and staff moving horses from different spots throughout the day, allowing for multiple studies and photo opportunities to support continued studio work based on the weekend efforts.

Event Summary
This is NOT a teaching weekend; this is for primarily independent work. Some tutor and peer support available.
Painting will take place in three sessions across Saturday and Sunday. Artists may register for a single session or multiple sessions. Artists are not required or expected to work for an entire session - each person’s pace is their own!
Artists will work from designated locations with visibility to the horses, the farm and the landscape, some indoor, most outdoor. We will be creative in choosing a variety of locations that are both safe and interesting. Painting stations will be set up with unique access to our residents, including a ‘donkey station’, a buckboard and horse in gear, and wild horse viewing. There will also be some ’still life’ displays arranged with farm and equine equipment. If you want to paint from a spot that is not designated, ask and we will consider if at all possible. Artists may paint from more than one location each day. We will have equine handlers and staff moving horses from different spots throughout the day, allowing for multiple studies and photo opportunities to support continued studio work based on the weekend efforts.
Participation is capped at 12 artists per session to ensure a safe and manageable experience for all. Registration is first come, first serve.
An optional bonfire will take place on Saturday evening for artists participating both days. An optional discussion and sharing of work will take place on Sunday at noon.
Rosemary Farm Sanctuary is a working farm; there are uneven surfaces, dirt, hay and people continuing daily chores. Care must be taken working around live animals. Artists are expressly prohibited from entering any field or structure unless it is a designated painting area.
Artists are expected to be self-sufficient with supplies for comfortable working outdoors (portable easel, portable chair or stool, sun or rain umbrella, paints, charcoals, pencils or other preferred medium, bottled water, paper towels). We strongly recommend suitable footwear and clothing for the weather (both cool mornings/evenings and hot afternoons, plus sun, wind, rain).
There is a bathroom onsite and we will supply tea, coffee and fresh water (you bring refillable bottles).
Trash cans will be available; please leave the area clean!
Entry fees do not include meals or housing and are non-refundable. Event is rain or shine.
Lodging is available at numerous Airbnbs as well as several hotels within a 30-40 minute driving range of the Sanctuary. Click here for more information.
PLEASE LEAVE PETS AT HOME. NO ANIMALS ALLOWED!
NOTE: Access to the Sanctuary will be closed to artists and guests on Saturday from 2pm-5pm to allow for chores and tending to the horses.
