Plein Air Painting Weekend
“Horses and Painters” at Rosemary Farm Sanctuary
August 17-18, 2024
Rosemary Farm Sanctuary is proud to announce our Inaugural Plein Air Painting Weekend, “Horses & Painters, 2024”.
Hosted at our 200+ acre historic farm in the Western Catskill Mountains of New York, with approximately 100 equines in residence, this is the first ever of what is sure to become a special annual event!
The festival invites independent artists of any skill level to join us at the Sanctuary for a weekend of painting the horses, the barns and the landscape of the beautiful Catskills. You will enjoy unprecedented access to the horses of Rosemary Farm and have the rare opportunity to draw and paint our herds from real life. And at the conclusion of the weekend, our special Juror Committee, headed by experienced area fine arts jurors, will award three cash prizes to those who choose to submit any of their work created over the weekend for review. Registration is limited to 20 participants so don’t hesitate if you are interested.

Event Summary
This is NOT a teaching weekend; this is for primarily independent work.
Artists may work in their chosen medium and scale.
Artists will work from designated locations with visibility to the horses and the landscape, some indoor, most outdoor. We will be creative in choosing a variety of locations that are both safe and interesting. If you want to paint from a spot that is not designated, ask and we will consider if at all possible. Artists may paint from more than one location each day.
Painting will take place on Saturday and Sunday. An optional artists critique and bonfire will take place on Saturday evening. NOTE: Artists who prefer to participate one day only may join for just Saturday.
Artists wishing to submit their work for review and prize consideration must have their board(s) stamped on Saturday morning. Submission for review is optional!
A juried panel will review works submitted for awards on Sunday afternoon and choose three prize winners (1st Prize $300, 2nd Prize $200, 3rd Prize $100).
Participation is capped at 20 artists to ensure a safe and manageable experience for all. Registration is first come, first serve.
Artists are expected to be self-sufficient with supplies for working outdoors throughout the day. There is a bathroom onsite and we will supply fresh water (you bring refillable bottles) and pre-packaged snacks.
Entry fees do not include meals or housing and are non-refundable. Event is rain or shine.
Lodging is available at numerous Airbnbs as well as several hotels within a 30-40 minute driving range of the Sanctuary. Click here for more information.
Non-Painters, Visitors & Admirers are invited to join us at 11am Saturday for our regular 90-minute paid walking tour of the Sanctuary. In addition to meeting many of our horses up close and personal you’ll get to observe the artists at work along the way! Come appreciate the view and share in the weekend — get your tickets below.
Thank you for joining us for this very special event! We hope this becomes an annual tradition at Rosemary Farm, and we hope that with your participation, it will be a great success.
