What a Night!
Well over 200 horses were consigned at the end of summer “Camp Horse Auction” , which dragged into nine hours. Our early possible choices sold for $1,700 and up, so we set our sights on the horses at the end of the auction. These are the horses not advertised in advance and for good reason.
There wasn’t much time to evaluate the line of last choices, but we were drawn to a group of old draft horses. And then a horse we could not let go entered the floor, his front leg is damaged, he is really lame, a bay with a tangled mane and terrified eye. Big enough to be of interest for slaughter dealers who eye a horse up and down to estimate weight, quality of meat, do some quick math, and determine their purchase limit, he was worth a bid or two, but not much more. Do you think he knew that his life was in the balance? We won his life and changed his final chapter with our action.
Meet Tim, a ~10 year old bay Standardbred cross (possibly Morgan), in the most serious condition of the horses who came to Rosemary Farm.
Basically driven to death, he was dumped in pain to sell for his flesh, but we were there instead. Tim has significant carpal sheath swelling on both front legs, likely bowed tendons underneath that. We are putting together a protocol to reduce the inflammation and pain, using ice, and the Bemer, wraps and pain meds. Dental and veterinary care are also in order as we source out the reson or all of his conditions. He is quiet and cooperative, and has been laying down, so that is great. Step by step.
