PIP
One night just before Christmas, what feels like a million years ago but was actually 15, both Rosemary Farm Sanctuary and Squirrelwood Sanctuary were represented at an auction. It was dark and cold and gloomy in the back aisles where we prowled, looking for any horse that might need us, instead of being on the road to see family, like normal people. We laughed at our weirdness and kept making the rounds.
In the back aisle, laying on the ground, were three baby Appaloosas, without mommas, very thin and furry and frightened. We agreed right then and there to help them, and Rosemary Farm rescued the two colts for $10 each (seriously!) while Squirrelwood rescued the filly, who looked like a triplet to the boys. They were likely all half siblings, filthy and starved. We named our boys Comet and Blitzen, and they grew to be beautiful, healthy horses, beloved by our extended family. Eventually our two were adopted out together, to a kind home. Their half sister grew up at Squirrelwood and is named Pip. She was never adopted, fading to a near white, happy and safe in sanctuary.
When Squirrelwood closed its doors, Pip remained as one of the last unplaced horses, and Rosemary Farm had agreed we would take in any remaining horses, if needed. It is fitting and beautiful that this mare joins us at Rosemary Farm, and we can continue the promise of lifetime care and protection made a decade and a half ago.
