DIMITRI

“Nickname”

Two horses who were at the end of their lifeline.

A handsome black gelding, 17 yo, who knew one home for his whole life and had one equine friend; a mini mare who is now 14 yo. But the home ran out of resources. This happens a lot actually, and in this case, the owner pulled some strings to get them placed at a rehab center for humans to work as therapy horses. Even though it meant giving them up, they would be safe. This would have been a great solution, from our perspective, but it was not, from theirs. It wasn't home. And, unfortunately these two horses had very, very, little training and grew up as pets, with a family that never expected to say goodbye. This left them poorly prepared for this new life and new job. And at their new home, with handlers changing every few weeks... well everyone tried but after two years, TWO YEARS, it was still not a success. The rehab center really, really tried. Over time neither was being handled, and it was time to go home.

But there was no home to return to.

The owner reached out to everyone, but few will accept horses with little to no handling. Both are fit and friendly, and the longer story, which involves human hospice and overwhelmed caregivers, got to us. Those of us caught between children and parents, pets and jobs, sometimes become overwhelmed.

While we can't always, this time, We said yes.
