Our trusted friends at Little Brook Farm have been building inroads with a farming community that uses horses for labor, horses that are generally dumped at auction when they are worn out, to sell to slaughter. While area rescues (including Rosemary Farm) watch for these horses at auction, to save their lives, Little Brook has been slowly getting the farming families to reach out directly to the rescue community instead, and choose a better way, which is wonderful, even if the timing, sometimes, is not!
Little Brook had answered a call and said yes, but then on the heels of it, a new offer to pull two MORE horses came, and they were now full. So they called us. Could Rosemary Farm help?
The two horses, off the same farm, were headed to auction unless we could welcome them — a thin, worn out Standardbred mare, and an aging Morgan stallion. Shipping out one way or another, just a matter of which trailer would they get on. And sothe trailer became a freedom ride for this lucky pair.
The Standie mare is 17 yo and worked hard for her entire life; to say she s overdue for an abundance of kindness is an understatement. We have named her Blossom. Hand shy, she has the softest fur on her neck, where she loves to be scratched. Everything here is new to her; grain twice a day, lots of fresh clean hay, fresh water, turnout, freedom to move her own body. Like many working road horses, she was not given treats, and doesn’t even know what they are.
Blossom had immediate adoption interest but our intake vet process discovered severe arthritis and joint degeneration that will require careful pain management to maintain her comfort, so we have now shifted our focus to hospice and ensuring she is allowed to enjoy the purity of just being a horse, in control of her own body, experiencing nothing but love, and being pain free, for as long as we can maintain the balance.
